VEstibuLAR AND OCULAR TESTING AT ORS
Vestibular testing consists of a number of tests that help determine if there is something wrong with the vestibular (balance) portion of the inner ear. At ORS, we put our patients through a very thorough series of tests to determine their balance capabilities, degree of dizziness, and their ability to maintain clarity of vision under vertigo type symptoms, and then determine the plan of care to eliminate or reduce the symptoms.
What Ocular & Vestibular rehab is and what the benefits are:
Ocular therapy is therapy that focuses on the eye, muscles of the eye, and eye movement.
Ocular & Vestibular therapy goals: Improve brains ability to control eye alignment, movement, focus and visual processing along with the inner ear when stimulated by an outside stimulus. Visual and balance skills are reinforced through repetition and integrated with cognitive/motor as well as balance working on balance skills in all planes of the body until these skills become automatic.
Ocular effects during a concussion are headache, eye strain, blurriness, diplopia, oscillopsia, frontal headache, and poor eye tracking.
Vestibular effects during a concussion are vertigo, dizziness, visual disturbance, and/or imbalance that stem from issues with the inner ear.
Due to the design of the inner ear and the location of the nerves that innervate ocular muscles, the vestibular and ocular motor skills can be affected when someone sustains a concussion. Due to the nature of how concussion are sustained all patients can be affected differently.
The benefit/goal of therapy would be that it would correct any of these issues and hopefully reducing the chances of reoccurrence.
